Episode 4 – Bagel Time

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked the question “how much more expensive is it to eat a vegan diet?” This question always stuns me because eating a vegan diet is typically much less expensive than eating a diet that’s rich in animal products.

Here’s an example of a quick, easy, compassionate, healthful, delicious, filling and dirt cheap vegan meal.

    It’s been a while since I last talked to you, hope things are going well. I think your website and videos are great. Keep up the good work.

    I have a comment/suggestion for a future topic. While I really admire your dedication to veganism and completely agree with you that modern mass production of animal products is ethically bankrupt, I know I will never likely give up animal products. I’m sorry to say that I just enjoy them too much.

    But, I’d be interested to hear if you have any suggestions for us non-vegans on how to eat more conscientiously. (Easy substitutions, the really bad things to avoid, etc.) I really think there might be things veganism could teach Americans about improving their eating habits, even if a lot of the population, like me doesn’t give up animal products entirely. We could all learn to eat healthier and more ethically responsible.

    Hey, great videos. I got here through vegan.com and like your short vids. I’ve been eating hummus bagel sandwhiches forever and grow my own sprouts for them. You can spice things up a bit with some radish or broccoli sprouts, and you can also use baba ganoush instead of hummus. Keep up the great work!

    Great site, and great idea: it’s one of those things that you think damn, I should have patented it 1st :)

    I’m in the UK, so don’t unfortunately have a Trader Joes, but I’ve tried the bagels and hummus route a few times, and it’s pretty good. I love black pepper and sea salt hummus: see if you can track it down if you’ve never had it. Gorgeous.

    I’d be very interested to see if you could say anything in future on how you’ve found communicating and talking about your veganism to friends/family/spouses. I’ve been vegan for years now, and still find this one of the most challenging, but also sometimes inspiring parts of my life.

    Wow, what a great website, and what wonderful videos! You certainly are an inspiration! I also found your site through vegan.com, and will definitely subscribe. While I have been vegan for years, I am always looking for new and clever ideas to help friends and family think about what they are eating. While none are vegan (yet . . .) I definitely have them all eating healthier. Future ideas – if you don’t grow any of your own veggies, please give it a try! Or inspire others to plant some. A container with one tomato plant is a great start. I am in South Florida, so I tend to have a garden year round. There are several months of the year I don’t have to buy any salad goodies, I just have to go pick them. Talk about saving money on your food bill. Anyway, thanks again for taking time to make a difference. Oh – and I love your eco sneaks from a couple episodes back!

    I went to meijer, and got some nice onion/multi seed bagles. Then I picked up some really good hommus (not sure why it was spelled hommus instead of hummus?), however the flavor was amazing and the consistancy much better than what I was used to. Then I also got some crunch bean sprouts. Then when I got home I toasted the bagles and gave it a shot. I must say the flavors are very good, and even for someone my size it was a filling meal. Next, I put some nice bread and butter pickles on it and tried that and found that to be a very complimentary taste. Thank you for the great info and the videos, will be watching.

    Thanks for the great idea! I just started a vegan diet on Sunday, and this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for — something easy to throw together for lunch that doesn’t require heating. I bought the ingredients yesterday and my husband and I have already eaten all the sprouts! I found lemon & dill hummus, which was delicious. I’ve never bought sprouts before, so thanks for introducing me to a new food! Any advice for newbies making the transition is appreciated.
